Our breasts change over time and can lose elasticity and firmness. Breast changes can be more significant after:
- Pregnancy. As breasts become fuller and heavier, the ligaments which support the breasts can stretch and may not return to their pre-pregnancy state. This can also occur with breastfeeding.
- Weight changes. Changes in your body weight can cause the delicate breast skin to stretch and lose elasticity.
- The effects of gravity. Over time, gravity causes ligaments in the breasts to stretch and sag (especially for those with larger, heavy breasts).

About the Breast Uplift procedure
A general anaesthetic is required for this procedure which will put you to sleep for between one and two hours. You will be asleep for the duration of the operation and will not feel any pain while the surgery is being carried out.
The operation is a straightforward surgical procedure involving excess skin being removed and breast tissue being reshaped to raise the appearance of the breasts. The nipples are then repositioned to suit the new shape of the breasts.
Stitches will be used to close the small wounds and dressings applied.
When you come round from your anaesthetic, you will be taken to a private room to rest and recuperate until you are ready to go home.
Usually a stay of one or two days is required for breast reduction surgery.
You will be given pain relief after the surgery to reduce discomfort which you will continue to take when you return home.
Once you are ready to leave the hospital, you should be picked up by a friend, family member or taxi as you will not be able to drive.
You should be aware that recovery from a breast uplift procedure can take up to 12 weeks, during which time you will be given instructions on how to aid the healing process. We recommend that you avoid strenuous exercise, swimming, heavy lifting and housework for the first 6 weeks. You will also need to spend the first few weeks wearing a supportive garment to make you more comfortable and to protect the breast area.
Take things easy, take a week or so off work and rest. You will be able to increase your levels of activity gradually and should be able to return to normal activity after four to six weeks.
An experienced team will be available to support you in the weeks after your surgery. The Consultant Plastic Surgeon will want to see you for a follow-up appointment to check that you are healing correctly and that you are happy.
As with any medical procedure, there is the rare possibility of complications. The signs of infection will be explained to you and occasionally, additional antibiotics or further surgery may be necessary. The aftercare team will be on hand to answer any concerns you may have and you should call straight away if you are concerned about any symptoms that you are experiencing.
A minimum of 7 days is required to cancel or reschedule an appointment. There will be a charge if less than 7 days notice is given. Please see our T’s & C’s for full details.
