Saxenda is a fat dissolving injection, which is self-administered on a daily basis to reduce appetite and increase weight loss.
This medication has been licensed for use in the UK. It is safe and effective, but must be prescribed by a Doctor who may carry out a blood test to check your liver and kidney function before prescribing the medication.
The injections work by suppressing appetite of patients with a BMI above 30 (or above 27 with some weight related medical conditions).
This drug was initially developed as a treatment for diabetes. When doses were increased in diabetes patients, the drug appeared to reduce appetite and encourage weight loss. Extensive UK trials have since taken place and the drug is now fully licensed as a weight loss aid when prescribed by a Doctor.
Will these slimming injections work for me?
At Core Medical Clinics, we will only prescribe Saxenda if you have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of over 30. We will also consider you if you have a BMI of over 27 weight-related illness, such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.
The consultation appointment with Doctor Williams is an important part of the process because we need to assess your state of health and safety to use this medication. There are a couple of reasons which may mean that you are not suitable, including if you have kidney disease.
We may carry out a blood test at your consultation if it is deemed necessary.
Patient safety is our number one priority and whilst this medication is considered safe and effective, it is our duty of care to you to ensure that you suitable for treatment.
How do I start?
Request your consultation by clicking here and we will get back to you within 24 hours, but usually more quickly. You can also call the clinic on 01924 290816 or email us on email@example.com.
How much does it cost?
There are a couple of options available. The recommended and most cost-effective option is with a 10 week course of injections at a cost of £850. We recommend the 10 week course because after that amount of time, you should have fully experienced the appetite reduction and have seen a reduction in your weight. You will then be able to make an informed decision as to whether you would like to continue with the injections. If you have not lost any weight within this time period (this is rare – only in 1 out of 12 people see no weight loss), trials show that this treatment will likely not work for you.
What happens if I stop taking it?
If you stop taking the drug before the end of the programme, you are likely to regain any lost weight unless you have been able to make permanent lifestyle changes. Supporting the weight loss injection programme with healthy eating and exercise is key to your long-term weight loss goals being achieved.
What are the risks and side effects?
Patients may feel mild nausea, especially at the very start of the treatment course and at any increase in dosage. This should settle down each time it occurs as the body adjusts to the medication. There is a very low risk of gall bladder disease and pancreatitis, but the likelihood of these will be fully explained at your consultation.
A minimum of 72 hours is required to reschedule, 7 days to cancel an appointment. Please see our T’s & C’s for full details.
