Men, women and children can experience periods of stress, anxiety or depression at some point in their lives. A certain amount of stress can be a positive thing, helping you to prepare for new and challenging situations or helping you through life’s difficulties. Too much stress or anxiety however, especially over a long period of time, can cause mental and physical symptoms which can impact negatively on your life and cause discomfort. Depression can result from periods of longer term anxiety or stress.
Symptoms are wide-ranging and can affect people in very different ways.
Excessive fear or worry is usually the most common symptom, as well as:
- Chest Pain
- Tension in your muscles
- Trouble Sleeping
- Mood Swings
- Feeling overly hot or cold
- Obsessive thinking
- Panic Attacks
- Wanting to stay in bed
- Wanting to remain at home and not go outside
If you are experiencing the symptoms of stress, anxiety or depression in your life, you should not feel alone. These feelings are very common and there are a number of ways in which you can be helped to feel better. Acknowledging that you need help is an important and brave first step. You can make an appointment with your GP or you could see someone privately. At Core Medical Clinics, we offer appointments with Dr Sharma Firdous, who is an experienced GP with a warm and friendly personality. She will listen to your concerns and may offer to prescribe you some medication, or could signpost you to other services that she feels may help you.
You can also embark on lifestyle changes that might help you to feel more positive. Exercise has an important role to play in releasing endorphins into the bloodstream, which can make you feel physically and mentally better (even though it might feel challenging to get started on an exercise routine when you feel overwhelmed, it can really help.) You might also wish to explore mindfulness or meditation as a means of feeling calmer and more able to cope.
You might also decide to explore talking therapies, which can be very beneficial over the longer term to help work out any underlying issues that may be making you feel this way.
If you are experiencing any such feelings of stress, anxiety or depression, the first step is to talk to someone. Our clinic in central Wakefield is a calm, quiet and welcoming space where you will be treated with the utmost care, respect and privacy.
A minimum of 72 hours is required to reschedule, 7 days to cancel an appointment. Please see our T’s & C’s for full details.
